Latin Mass Society


The Wheeling Area Latin Mass Society is a group of Catholic faithful dedicated to the promotion of the traditional Latin Mass and the preservation of Catholic tradition in the Ohio Valley.  We are an established Extraordinary Form Mass community offering licit Masses with the approval of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

November 14th, 6:30 P.M. - Saint Alphonsus Church - Wheeling, WV

Join us for a Missa Cantata (sung Mass).  Mass begins at 6:30 p.m.  Confessions available from 6:00-6:30.  Reception to follow Mass in Columbia Hall on the lower level of the church. Canon William Avis, pastor of Most Precious Blood of Jesus Parish in Pittsburgh, PA, will be the celebrant.

Sean Maxwell, organist at Kloster Baumgartenberg, Austria will be providing music for the Mass along with Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Schola Cantorum.

November 13th, 7:00 P.M. - Grace Lutheran Church - Bethlehem, WV

Join us as international organist Sean Maxwell performs organ works of the traditional liturgy in “Music and the Latin Mass as Art”.  Admission is free, donations will be accepted at the door and are greatly appreciated.

A native of West Virginia, Maxwell has been active as an organist and harpsichordist in Austria since 2015. He has held positions in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston as well as with the Orchestra of the St. Cecilia Guild of Sacred Music Steyr (Austria), Baumgartenberg Monastery (Austria) and the Coro Litúrgico Universitário (Portugal). Maxwell works extensively with various organizations in support of the Traditional Latin Mass and combines that work with his great passion for early music and historically informed performance practice.

As a recitalist, Maxwell has performed throughout Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

October 21st, 6:30 P.M. - Saint Alphonsus Church - Wheeling, WV

Our October meeting will be held in Columbia Hall on the lower floor of the church.  Following the business portion of the meeting, we will be showing Episode 1 of the documentary Mass of The Ages.  Coffee/tea and donuts will be provided for a small donation.  Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

August 22nd, 6:30 P.M. - Saint Alphonsus Church - Wheeling, WV

A Missa Cantata (Sung Latin Mass) will be celebrated on August 22nd at 6:30 P.M. for the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  The mass will be immediately followed by an Ice Cream Social in the basement of the church.  Bring your friends and family!

May 13th, 7:00 P.M. - Saint Alphonsus Church - Wheeling, WV


There will be a Missa Cantata (sung Mass) in honor of Our Lady of Fatima at Saint Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church near Centre Market in Wheeling (2111 Market Street).  Mass begins at 7 P.M. and will be followed by a reception downstairs in Columbia Hall on the lower floor of the church.  Contact us via email or Facebook if you have any questions.
